Is there a way to send texts from Gmail using a Google Voice number?

Texts sent using the SMS (text messaging) in Chat feature are sent using a different number than my Google Voice number.

Initiating SMS messages from the Gmail labs gadget will not send from your voice number at this time. However, if you are forwarding your incomming SMS messages from Google Voice to Gmail, you can respond to them in Gmail like responding to an email.

Is there a way to programmatically manipulate gmail in real time without using filters? I.e. move mail around as it comes in.
